Public Health Data Reporter, Freelance

8/2022 - Present

• Designed and developed the Michigan Air Violations Tracker for local environmental news outlet Planet Detroit. Wrote an automated program that parses new PDF violations daily and adds them the website and public datasets.
• Constructed custom datasets for Planet Detroit by scraping and parsing thousands of pdfs hosted on a state database.
• Wrote grant proposal and designed mockups for public health data dashboard.
• Created and published a public dataset of 80,000 Michigan air polluter records that is updated daily by an automatic scraper using Github Actions and is used by environmental journalists and advocates across the state. Collected, cleaned and joined multiple data sources in order to track polluter violations by company and location.

• Constructed enterprise datasets through scraping, public records requests, text analysis, and PDF parsing.
